About the People's Bank and Trust Company Building
An Art Deco skyscraper from 1931, this bank building stands at 663 Main Avenue in Passaic, New Jersey. At 154 feet (47 m), it is the tallest building in the city. Its National Register of Historic Places listing, on November 19, 2018, cited its architecture.
In 1930 the bank acquired three other banks and needed a larger building. The New York City firm of Halsey, McCormack and Helmer designed it in the Art Deco style; the firm had earlier designed the Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower. John W. Ferguson Company of Paterson built it. The first floor has storefronts, topped by an ashlar limestone section holding large windows and then a yellow buff brick office tower. The building was originally 11 stories, and a mezzanine on the third floor was added in 2016.
