About the Cathedral of St Bavo, Haarlem

The Cathedral of Saint Bavo in Haarlem, the Netherlands, is the principal cathedral of the Haarlem-Amsterdam diocese of the Roman Catholic Church. Joseph Cuypers built it between 1895 and 1930 as the successor to the St. Joseph church in the Jansstraat. That church had itself replaced the Sint-Bavokerk, which was converted from Catholicism to Protestantism in 1578.

Bishop Gaspard Bottemanne began planning the new cathedral in 1893. Pierre Cuypers was first expected to design it, but because of his age his son Joseph became the architect. Joseph first designed a neo-gothic church, then after numerous changes settled on a neo-romanesque style with Byzantine and jugendstil influences.

Work began in 1895 on the choir and the chapels radiating from it, and the cathedral was consecrated on April 1, 1898. The transept and nave followed from 1902 to 1906. A shortage of money postponed the towers until 1927. Inside, the former sacristy is now a small museum, a schatkamer, with historical artifacts from Haarlem's Catholic past, including a painting of Saint Bavo, the patron saint, from the 17th century.
