About FNB Stadium

Johannesburg’s FNB Stadium, which also goes by Soccer City and the Calabash, hosts football and rugby union. It sits in Nasrec, which borders Soweto, in South Africa. The ground has carried the FNB name since it opened on October 7, 1989, thanks to a deal with First National Bank over naming rights. During the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and the month before it, it went by Soccer City, because FIFA does not allow sponsored stadium names at its tournaments. Kaizer Chiefs F.C. play there.

The stadium was upgraded for the 2010 World Cup to a new design inspired by the calabash, an African pot. HOK Sport (now Populous) and Boogertman + Partners designed the work, and it was completed on October 21, 2009. Outside, the cladding forms a mosaic in fire and earth tones, with a ring of lights near the bottom that imitates a fire under the pot. No spectator sits more than 100 meters (330 ft) from the field. It became the largest stadium in Africa.

The first speech Nelson Mandela gave in Johannesburg after being released from prison in 1990 took place here, and a memorial service for him was held at the stadium on December 10, 2013. Funerals of the anti-apartheid activists Chris Hani and Oliver Tambo were also held there in 1993. The 2010 FIFA World Cup Final, played by the Netherlands and Spain, took place at the ground, and its closing ceremony brought Mandela’s last public appearance.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 700 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 17 mm 1:4,375
200 mm 21 mm 1:3,500
256 mm 27 mm 1:2,734

A roof ring over open stands
A broad roof ring wraps the bowl and rises over the tiered stands inside. Print friendly adapts the thin roof edge to your print scale; Full detail keeps every row of stands, which suits a larger print or a fine nozzle.
Fine bands on the outer wall
The outer wall is covered in thin horizontal bands and panel lines. A larger print size shows them more clearly, and layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keep them crisp.
One piece with the ground
FNB Stadium is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. FNB Stadium takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

About this model

FNB Stadium is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.

Common questions

Is there a FNB Stadium STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. FNB Stadium grows with the print: about 17 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
