About the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa
Zeitz MOCAA, short for Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, is a non-profit public museum based in Cape Town, South Africa. When it opened on September 22, 2017, it was the largest museum for contemporary art from Africa and from its diaspora. The museum stands in the Silo District of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. Its galleries show temporary exhibitions and a permanent collection, and the institution also has a Centre for Art Education, a rooftop restaurant, a retail shop and a coffee shop.
The V&A Waterfront and the German businessman Jochen Zeitz partnered to commission the museum. The Waterfront put more than R500 million into construction and infrastructure, and Zeitz has lent his art collection for the length of his life. The museum building was carved out of a historic grain silo, 57 m tall, that was originally built from 1921 to 1924.
Heatherwick Studio, the architects, aimed to preserve the silo's industrial heritage while cutting big open spaces out of its 42 tightly packed concrete cylinders. Conversion began in 2014 under the London-based designer Thomas Heatherwick. The interior was cut out to form galleries and a large central atrium, and the remaining shafts were capped with strengthened glass to let in natural light. The most noticeable exterior change is the pillowed glass panels on the upper floors. The museum has nine floors and 9,500sqm, including 6,000sqm of exhibition space.
How it prints
Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

- Rows of tall cylinders
- The lower walls are rows of upright cylinders. Layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keep their curves smooth, and a larger print keeps the gaps between them clear.
- Gridded tower and rooftop frame
- The upper tower has a fine frame of bays and a thin open frame on top. Print friendly adapts these to the print scale; Full detail keeps them, which suits a larger print.
- One piece with the ground
- The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
- Pick the detail for your nozzle
- In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
- Colors
- Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa takes the building color.
- File format
- You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
