About Tranquility Base
Apollo 11 landed at Tranquility Base, in the southwest of the Sea of Tranquility, on July 20, 1969. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin spent 2 hours 31 minutes outside and collected 20 kg (44 lb) of samples, while Michael Collins orbited overhead. Armstrong steered past boulders around West crater and landed with only tens of seconds of fuel left.
Three small craters just north of the site are named for the crew: Aldrin, Collins and Armstrong. Moltke, a 6 km (4 mi) crater, lies just to the southeast.
