About the Menin Gate

At Ypres in Belgium stands the Menin Gate, whose full name is Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing, a war memorial. It honors British and Commonwealth soldiers killed in the Ypres Salient during World War I who have no known grave. It marks the eastern way out of town and the start of one of the main roads that Allied soldiers took to the front line. Sir Reginald Blomfield designed it, and the Imperial War Graves Commission, later renamed the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, built it. It was unveiled on July 24, 1927.

The original narrow gateway of medieval Ypres, set in its eastern wall, bore the name Hangoartpoort. By 1914 it went by Menenpoort in Dutch, or Menin Gate in English, a name taken from the road beyond it, which ran to the small town of Menen. Some 300,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers were killed in the Ypres Salient, and 90,000 of them have no known graves.

The arch, a triumphal design by Blomfield dated 1921, leads into a barrel-vaulted passage that runs through a mausoleum honoring the Missing. The lion on top is the lion of Britain and also of Flanders. The memorial bears, on stone panels in a large Hall of Memory, the names of 54,395 Commonwealth soldiers lost in the Salient whose bodies were never identified or found. The 34,984 UK missing after August 15, 1917 appear on the Tyne Cot Memorial instead. Rudyard Kipling proposed the inscription inside the archway and composed the main overhead inscription.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 8 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 10 mm 1:3,000
256 mm 13 mm 1:2,344

Slim columns and a small lion
Slender columns frame the arch, and a small lion sits on the roof. Print friendly adapts these small parts to the print scale; Full detail keeps them on a larger print.
A wide curved archway
A tall arch opens through the middle of the structure. Thinner layers of 0.12–0.16 mm keep the curve smooth, and a larger print size gives the arch more room.
One piece with the ground
The Menin Gate is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Menin Gate takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

About this model

The Menin Gate is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.

Common questions

Is there a Menin Gate STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. The Menin Gate grows with the print: about 8 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
