About Old Main (University of Arizona)
Old Main began life as the University of Arizona's School of Agriculture building, and it was the first building put up on the campus in Tucson. It ranks among the oldest surviving educational buildings in the western United States. In 1972 the building was listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Phoenix architect James Miller Creighton designed it, and construction began on October 27, 1887.
The $37,969 budget was spent before the roof was done. When university officials learned that agricultural schools could get federal loans, they renamed it the School of Agriculture instead of the School of Mines it was first meant to be. Federal funding paid for finishing it, and it opened for the university's first class on October 1, 1891. As the only building on campus, it held the classrooms, library, offices and dorms. In 1891, six faculty members taught 32 students.
A fountain in front of Old Main, the Alexander Berger Memorial Fountain, dates from 1919. Berger paid for it as a memorial to 13 University of Arizona students killed in the First World War, among them his nephew. Neglect left Old Main in disrepair, and the City of Tucson condemned it in 1938. The US Navy repaired it in 1942 for a Naval Indoctrination Training School in World War II, which averted demolition. Renovation of the whole building began in January 2013, and it was back in use ahead of the 2014-15 school year.
How it prints
Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.
| Print size | Landmark height | Scale |
|---|---|---|
| 160 mm default | 4 mm | 1:3,750 |
| 200 mm | 5 mm | 1:3,000 |

- Slim porch posts
- Slim posts and railings line the porches. Print friendly adapts these thin parts to the print scale; Full detail keeps them, which suits a larger print.
- Turrets and chimneys
- Pyramid-roofed turrets mark the corners and small chimneys sit on the roofs. A bigger print size helps them show, and layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keep the peaks crisp.
- One piece with the ground
- Old Main (University of Arizona) is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
- Pick the detail for your nozzle
- In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
- Colors
- Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. Old Main (University of Arizona) takes the building color.
- File format
- You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
