About Aachen Cathedral

Aachen Cathedral, called the Aachener Dom in German, is a Catholic church located in Aachen, Germany, that serves as the Diocese of Aachen's cathedral. It is among Europe's oldest cathedral buildings. Charlemagne had it built as the royal chapel of his Palace of Aachen, and he was buried there in 814. In the years 936 to 1531, thirty-one German kings were crowned in the original Palatine Chapel.

Later it was much expanded and served as a minster and collegiate church. It was briefly a cathedral between 1803 and 1825 and became one again in 1930 after the Diocese of Aachen was revived. UNESCO placed it among its first 12 World Heritage Sites in 1978, because of its exceptional artistry, its architecture and its central importance to Holy Roman Empire history.

Two architectural styles dominate. At the core stands the Palatine Chapel, in Carolingian-Romanesque style, which drew on Ravenna's Basilica of San Vitale and is notably small next to the later additions. Its inner octagon has a diameter of 14.46 meters (47.4 ft). Odo of Metz is credited with the construction, which began around 796, and the completed chapel was consecrated by Pope Leo III in 805. A Gothic choir hall was added in 1355.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 21 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 26 mm 1:3,000
256 mm 33 mm 1:2,344

Tall spire and slim turrets
A tall spire rises from the tower, with slim turrets around its base. Print friendly adapts thin parts to the print scale; Full detail keeps them, which suits a larger print. Printing slowly helps tall, thin tips.
Narrow windows and arches
Tall narrow windows line the choir hall, and the octagon has many arches. A bigger print size keeps more of them, and layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keep their edges crisp.
One piece with the ground
Aachen Cathedral is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. Aachen Cathedral takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

Common questions

Is there an Aachen Cathedral STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. Aachen Cathedral grows with the print: about 21 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
