About the Auckland Sky Tower

The Sky Tower in Auckland, New Zealand, serves as both a telecommunications tower and an observation tower. Its site is where Victoria Street meets Federal Street, in the city's CBD, and it is 328 meters (1,076 ft) tall, measured from the ground up to the tip of the mast. Until 2022, no other freestanding structure in the Southern Hemisphere was taller. It belongs to the SkyCity Auckland casino complex, and after two years and nine months of building, it opened on August 3, 1997.

High-performance reinforced concrete forms the tower. The shaft, 12 meters (39 ft) across, holds four elevators and an emergency stairwell and rests on eight "legs" set on 16 foundation piles drilled more than 15 m (49 ft) into the local sandstone. Climbing formwork was used for the main shaft, and the observation decks are clad in aluminum with blue-green reflective glass. The mast weighs more than 170 metric tons (190 short tons) and was lifted into place by a crane attached to the structure, since it was too heavy for a helicopter.

At 186 m (610 ft), the main observation level has glass floor sections 38 mm (1.5 in) thick. The top deck, the Skydeck at 220 m (720 ft), offers views as far as 82 km (51 mi). The tower is designed to withstand winds above 200 km/h (120 mph) and to sway up to 1 meter (39 in) in very high winds. It is also built to resist an earthquake of magnitude 8.0 within a 20-kilometer (12 mi) radius.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 88 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 110 mm 1:3,000
256 mm 141 mm 1:2,344

A very thin mast on top
The mast above the observation pod is extremely thin. Print slowly with good cooling; Print friendly adapts it to the print scale, while Full detail keeps it on a larger print, ideally with 0.12–0.16 mm layers.
A thin ring around the pod
A flat ring surrounds the observation pod and juts out past the shaft. A larger print size keeps the ring sturdier, and printing slowly helps the overhang.
One piece with the ground
The Auckland Sky Tower is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Auckland Sky Tower takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

About this model

The Auckland Sky Tower is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.

Common questions

Is there an Auckland Sky Tower STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. The Auckland Sky Tower grows with the print: about 88 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
