About Auckland

Auckland is a large metropolitan city on New Zealand's North Island and the country's most populous city. About 1,547,200 people lived in its urban area in June 2025, and the wider Auckland Region, governed by Auckland Council, had 1,816,000. The central urban area occupies a narrow isthmus, with the Tasman Sea's Manukau Harbour on one side and the Pacific Ocean's Waitematā Harbour on the other, which makes Auckland among the few cities worldwide with a harbor on each of two major bodies of water. The landscape includes 53 volcanic centers, which together form the Auckland Volcanic Field.

Auckland's architecture covers several eras, from its early days as a settlement through the Victorian period and the 20th century to the 21st. Heritage is protected under the Resource Management Act of 1991, and the Auckland Unitary Plan guides land use and development. Prominent historic buildings include the Dilworth Building, the Guardian Trust Building, the Old Customs House and the Auckland Town Hall, and many such buildings stand on Queen Street, the main street. The Sky Tower, the Harbour Bridge and the Ferry Building are also counted among its architectural landmarks. Māori settled the isthmus around 1350, building many pā, or fortified villages, mainly on volcanic peaks.
