About the Cathedral of Saint Augustine

In Tucson, Arizona, the Cathedral of Saint Augustine serves as the cathedral and mother church for Tucson's Catholic diocese. The cathedral grew out of St. Augustine Church, which Jean-Baptiste Salpointe, appointed pastor of Tucson in 1866, finished in 1868. Also in 1868, Pope Pius IX established the Vicariate Apostolic of Arizona with Salpointe as vicar apostolic, and St. Augustine Church became a cathedral.

A decision by Pope Leo XIII in 1897 turned the vicariate into the Diocese of Arizona, and Peter Bourgade became its first bishop. A new cathedral of brick was built that year. Plans called for a Gothic building, yet the spires were never added. In 1928 the diocese added a cast stone façade, aiming for a Mexican baroque form like that of Mexico's Querétaro Cathedral. The interior was gutted and rebuilt from 1966 to 1968, and a major renovation in 2010 ended with a rededication on February 12, 2011.

The façade carries Pope Pius XI's coat of arms, and indigenous desert plants such as yucca and saguaro blossoms appear in its stone designs, along with an image of Mission San Xavier del Bac. Inside, a crucifix 5.2 m (17 ft) tall, carved in Pamplona, Spain, in the 12th or 13th century, stands against the rear wall of the sanctuary. Up to 1,250 people fit inside.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 8 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 10 mm 1:3,000
256 mm 13 mm 1:2,344

Twin domed bell towers
Two bell towers end in small domes with lanterns and crosses, so print slowly with good cooling. Print friendly adapts these small details to the print scale; Full detail keeps them on a larger print.
Layered front relief
The front facade has layered relief around the entrance and a curved gable. A larger print size keeps it readable, and layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keep the relief crisp.
One piece with the ground
The Cathedral of Saint Augustine is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Cathedral of Saint Augustine takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
