About the Groninger Museum

The Groninger Museum is an art museum in Groningen, in the Netherlands, devoted to modern and contemporary art from local, national and international artists. Founded in 1874, the museum opened its own building on the Praediniussingel in 1894. The present building, completed in 1994, rises from a canal opposite Groningen railway station. Philippe Starck designed its silver cylindrical pavilion, Alessandro Mendini a yellow tower, and Coop Himmelb(l)au a pale blue deconstructivist space. A cycling and walking route into the city center includes a bridge that links the museum with the station.

The futuristic, colorful look recalls Memphis Group designs from Italian Post Modernism. In 1990, museum director Frans Haks asked Mendini to design the new museum, and Haks wanted something extravagant, insisting that non-architects create the conceptual studies. The American artist Frank Stella was first approached to design a pavilion, but his plan proved too costly, as he wanted the whole structure made of Teflon, so the municipality invited Coop Himmelb(l)au in his place. Gasunie, the Dutch natural gas company, mainly paid for the museum; celebrating its own 25th anniversary, it wanted to give the city a present and granted 25 million guilders.

Protesters halted construction for one year by going to the high court, since citizens objected to the controversial design. Building resumed in 1992, and the museum was completed in 1994. Residents took time to get used to the building's shapes and colors, though it soon proved popular. The museum holds around 80,000 objects across five collecting areas.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 12 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 15 mm 1:3,000
256 mm 19 mm 1:2,344

Tilted, angular roof planes
One pavilion is a cluster of tilted roof planes with sharp, thin edges. Print friendly adapts thin edges to the print scale; Full detail keeps them, which suits a larger print or a fine nozzle.
Tall tower beside a round drum
A tall square tower stands next to a low round drum with thin spokes across its roof. Print slowly with good cooling, and use layers of 0.12–0.16 mm to keep the tower's edges crisp.
One piece with the ground
The Groninger Museum is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Groninger Museum takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

About this model

The Groninger Museum is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.

Common questions

Is there a Groninger Museum STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. The Groninger Museum grows with the print: about 12 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
