About the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church

The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, mostly called simply the Memorial Church, is a Protestant church on the Kurfürstendamm, in the middle of Breitscheidplatz in Berlin. The original church on the site went up in the 1890s, and a 1943 bombing raid badly damaged it. The present buildings are a church with a foyer, and a separate belfry that has a chapel attached; they were built from 1959 to 1963. The spire of the old church, damaged in the raid, was kept, and its ground floor became a memorial hall. Berliners nickname the church "der hohle Zahn", which translates as "the hollow tooth".

Franz Schwechten won the competition to design the original church, planning a large Neo-Romanesque building with a facade of tuff stone and the Bonn Minster as its model. His design called for a spire 113 m (371 ft) high and a nave with seats for over 2,000 people. Its foundation stone was laid on March 22, 1891, and the church was dedicated on September 1, 1895. On the night of November 22, 1943, an air raid damaged it extensively. A remnant of the spire survived, and it is 71 m (233 ft) high.

Egon Eiermann won the 1956 competition to design the new church. His proposals first had the old spire coming down, but a public outcry led him to revise the design to keep the tower. The new complex has four buildings grouped around the old ruins: a church with a foyer on the west side, and a tower with a chapel on the east. The church is octagonal and the tower hexagonal, and both are built of concrete, steel and glass. The church walls are a concrete honeycomb holding 21,292 stained glass inlays designed by Gabriel Loire, mostly in blue.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 18 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 23 mm 1:3,000
256 mm 29 mm 1:2,344

Broken spire top
The old spire ends in a jagged, broken top above open arched belfry windows. Print friendly adapts these thin parts; a larger print keeps more of them, and layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keep the broken edges crisp.
Tall, slim grid tower
The new tower is tall and narrow, covered in a fine grid. Print friendly adapts the grid to your print scale; Full detail keeps every cell, best for a larger print. Printing slowly helps the slim shape.
One piece with the ground
The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

About this model

The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.

Common questions

Is there a Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church grows with the print: about 18 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
