About Berlin

Berlin is Germany's capital and largest city, and also one of its states, surrounded by Brandenburg. Its 3.7 million inhabitants give it more people within its limits than any other city in the European Union. The city grew up along the banks of the Spree. Located where two important trade routes crossed, it was first documented in the 13th century, later serving as capital of the Kingdom of Prussia, the German Empire, the Weimar Republic and Nazi Germany. After World War II the Berlin Wall divided it into West Berlin and East Berlin; after reunification in 1990 it regained its role as capital of the entire country.

Berlin's history produced a polycentric metropolitan area with a mixed range of architecture. About 17% of buildings date from the Gründerzeit or earlier, and nearly 25% from the 1920s and 1930s, when the city contributed to the origins of modern architecture. Many buildings that survived wartime bombing were demolished in the postwar period, and after reunification important heritage structures such as Charlottenburg Palace and the Gendarmenmarkt were reconstructed. The 368 m (1,207 ft) Fernsehturm at Alexanderplatz, built in 1969, ranks among the EU's tallest structures. The Potsdamer Platz quarter was built from scratch following the fall of the Wall.
