About Krak des Chevaliers

Krak des Chevaliers is a medieval castle in Syria that ranks among the world's most important preserved medieval castles. It lies roughly 40 km (25 mi) to the west of Homs, near the Lebanese border, with the village of al-Husn around it. The castle sits atop a 650 m (2,130 ft) hill in the Homs Gap, the strategic route linking Tripoli with Homs.

Kurdish soldiers placed there by the Mirdasids were the first inhabitants of the site, in the 11th century. In 1142 Raymond II, Count of Tripoli, gave it to the Knights Hospitaller, who started a new castle in place of the Kurdish fortification. Their work continued to 1170, when an earthquake caused damage. A second phase of building in the 13th century created the outer wall and made it a concentric castle. The Mamluk Sultanate captured it in 1271 after a siege of 36 days, supposedly through a forged letter that appeared to come from the Hospitallers' Grand Master and made the knights surrender.

The name Krak comes from the Syriac word karak, meaning a fortress or walled city. Before the crusaders arrived, a local Arab ruler had set up a fortification manned by Kurds, called Ḥoṣn al-Akrād in Arabic, meaning fort of the Kurds, and the crusaders corrupted this into Le Crat and then Le Crac. It was called Crac de l'Ospital, or Fortress of the Hospital, in the Middle Ages. The name Krak des Chevaliers came in 19th-century French. UNESCO has recognized the castle, with Qal'at Salah El-Din, as World Heritage Sites since 2006.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 13 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 17 mm 1:3,000

Round towers with battlements
The castle is ringed by round towers topped with battlements. Print friendly adapts these small details to your print scale; Full detail keeps them, best on a larger print with 0.12 to 0.16 mm layers.
Concentric walls
An outer wall of round towers encloses an inner ring of walls and buildings. A larger print keeps the gap between the two rings readable.
One piece with the ground
Krak des Chevaliers is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. Krak des Chevaliers takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
