About the Palacio de las Cortes, Madrid

The Palacio de las Cortes is the seat of Spain's Congress of Deputies, one of two chambers in the Cortes Generales, the national Parliament. Its address is the Plaza de las Cortes, Madrid, on the block bounded by Carrera de San Jerónimo and Zorrilla Street, a short walk from the Paseo del Prado. The building ranks among Madrid's notable 19th-century works and follows a neoclassical design.

A convent, the Convent of the Holy Spirit, stood on the site; it was a house of the Clerics Regular Minor, and a fire left it badly damaged in 1823. After the liberal regime arrived in 1834, Francisco Martínez de la Rosa's moderate government used the conventual church for parliamentary sessions; when the Progressive Party took power it chose to replace the religious building. The architect Narciso Pascual Colomer designed and carried out the project. Construction began on October 10, 1843, and Queen Isabella II inaugurated the building on October 31, 1850; during the seven years of work the deputies met elsewhere in Madrid.

The main front faces Carrera de San Jerónimo. It has two floors, the lower one in rusticated stone and the upper with windows under triangular pediments. A large portico of six Corinthian columns carries a triangular pediment with a bas-relief of Spain with the Constitution; allegorical figures flank it. The sculptor Ponciano Ponzano made it. A monumental staircase in front is flanked by two bronze lions that Ponzano sculpted in 1866 and cast from cannons taken in the 1860 African War. Inside, the semicircular Session Hall shows bullet holes from the attempted coup of 1981.
