About Madrid

Madrid is Spain's capital and its largest city, and it is also the capital of the autonomous community that surrounds it. It sits on the River Manzanares, in the center of the Iberian Peninsula, at an elevation of about 660 meters (2,170 ft). In 2025 the city proper had over 3.4 million people, and within the European Union only Berlin is larger. Its core began as a walled military outpost in the late 9th century, during the time of the Emirate of Córdoba. Christians conquered it in 1083 or 1085, and after 1561 it became the permanent home of the Hispanic Monarchy's court.

Little medieval or Renaissance architecture survives in Madrid. After Philip II moved his court there in 1561, early 17th-century buildings attributed to Juan Gómez de Mora included the Plaza Mayor (1617–1619). In the 18th century Charles III pushed forward the Prado Museum and the Puerta de Alcalá. Between the mid-19th century and the Civil War, the Plan Castro produced the neighborhoods of Salamanca, Argüelles and Chamberí, and the Gran Vía was built in French, eclectic, art deco and expressionist styles. The four tallest skyscrapers in Spain, built in the 2000s, form the Cuatro Torres Business Area.
