About Queen Anne's Summer Palace
Queen Anne's Summer Palace, sometimes called Belvedere, stands in the Royal Garden at Prague Castle and is a Renaissance building. Ferdinand I commissioned it for his wife, Anne Jagiellonica. It was built between 1538 and 1560 on the garden's eastern edge, and the garden was founded at the same time. The Italian architect Paolo della Stella initially designed it, and Giovanni Spatio began construction, though both men died before the work was finished, as did Jagiellonica. It is considered one of the purest examples of Italian Renaissance architecture outside Italy.
The ground floor has an arcade gallery running around the whole building, while the upper floor holds residential rooms, a dance hall and a gallery. Bonifác Wohlmut added a copper roof above the arcade; della Stella's original design did not include it. In front of the palace stands a singing fountain from 1654.
The palace was not regularly used after its completion. Rudolf II then used the palace to house his guests, and made the first floor an astronomical observatory. Swedish soldiers used it as a military base during the Thirty Years War, and an artillery laboratory stood on the grounds for more than 100 years. In the 1950s the Czech architect Pavel Janák restored it and it housed exhibitions. It gained the status of National Cultural Monument in 1962, and since then it has hosted exhibitions of fine and applied arts.
