About Seville Cathedral and the Giralda

Seville Cathedral stands in Seville, in the Andalusia region of Spain. This Catholic cathedral is among the largest churches anywhere and is the largest of the Gothic type. Once finished in the early 16th century, it overtook Hagia Sophia as the world’s largest cathedral, a record that Byzantine church had kept for a thousand years. The Gothic part alone measures 126 meters (413 ft) long and 76 meters (249 ft) wide. In 1987 UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site, together with the neighboring Alcázar, plus the General Archive of the Indies.

The site began as a mosque ordered in 1172 by the Almohad caliph Abu Yaqub Yusuf; it was dedicated in 1182 and finished in 1198. Once Ferdinand III had conquered Seville, the mosque was turned into the city’s cathedral. In July 1401 the city’s leaders chose to replace it with a new cathedral, intended to show off Seville’s wealth as a major trading center following the Reconquista in 1248. Building started in 1402 and went on for more than a century. In 1511 the crossing lantern and some vaults collapsed and were rebuilt; the crossing fell again in 1888.

The Giralda is the cathedral’s bell tower and the former minaret of that mosque. It was built to look like the Koutoubia Mosque’s minaret in Marrakesh, Morocco, and became a bell tower after the Reconquista, though its topmost section dates from the Renaissance. Measured from the ground up to its weather vane, the tower is 104.5 meters (342 ft 10 in) tall. The statue on top, El Giraldillo, was installed in 1568. The remains of Christopher Columbus and of his son Diego rest in the cathedral.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

A line of slender pinnacles
Thin pinnacles rise along the walls and roofs. Print friendly adapts them to the print scale, while Full detail keeps every one, which suits a larger print or a fine nozzle.
A tall tower with a thin top
The Giralda narrows to a thin spire at the top. Layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm and a slower print speed help the tip stay crisp.
One piece with the ground
Seville Cathedral and the Giralda is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. Seville Cathedral and the Giralda takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
