About Seville
Seville serves as capital of both Andalusia, a Spanish autonomous community, and the province named after it, and it is Andalusia's largest city. It sits on the lower Guadalquivir River in the Iberian Peninsula's southwest. About 686,742 people lived in the municipality in 2024, and about 1.5 million in the metropolitan area, which puts Seville fifth among Spanish cities. Spain's only river harbor is the Port of Seville, about 80 km (50 miles) from the Atlantic Ocean. Founded by the Romans as Hispalis, the city joined the Crown of Castile in 1248, and the Spanish Empire's Atlantic trade made it one of western Europe's largest cities in the 16th century.
The Cathedral and the Alcázar palace complex, along with the General Archive of the Indies, make up the UNESCO site in the old town. Juan de Herrera drew up the Archive's Spanish Renaissance design in 1572. The Royal Tobacco Factory, built from 1728 to 1771 in a Baroque style, was on completion the biggest industrial building anywhere. The Real Maestranza bullring dates to a 1761 design; its Baroque façade was finished in 1787 and the rest only in 1881. The 20th century brought Expo '92 and, earlier, the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929. The Metropol Parasol, by Jürgen Mayer and finished in 2011, is the largest wooden structure in the world.
