About York Minster

York Minster stands in York, North Yorkshire, England, and is an Anglican cathedral. The archbishop of York, holder of the second-highest office in the Church of England, has his seat there, and the minster serves as the mother church of both the diocese and the province of York. Its dean and chapter administer it. It is both a scheduled monument and a Grade I listed building. The title minster goes back to the Anglo-Saxon period, when it meant a missionary teaching church; it has since become an honorific.

York's first recorded church was a wooden building put up in a hurry in 627 so that Edwin, King of Northumbria, could be baptized. Work on a Norman cathedral began in 1080. Walter de Gray, made archbishop in 1215, ordered a Gothic structure to rival Canterbury, and building began in 1220. The central tower collapsed in 1407, and a replacement tower went up from 1420. The western towers followed between 1433 and 1472, the year it was declared complete and consecrated.

The transepts are Early English Gothic, the nave and chapter house are Decorated Gothic, and the eastern arm and central tower are Perpendicular Gothic. Most of the minster's medieval stained glass remains in place, a notable survival compared with other European churches. The east window, which shows the Last Judgment, holds the world's largest expanse of medieval stained glass. The north transept's Five Sisters window is made up of five lancets filled with grisaille glass, each taller than 53 feet (16.3 m).

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes

Pinnacles on the towers
Small pinnacles crown the central tower and the two western towers. Print friendly adapts these thin points to the print scale; Full detail keeps them on larger prints, and printing slowly helps the tips.
Window tracery and long roofs
Rows of tall pointed windows run along the nave and transepts under long ridged roofs. These shallow details stay clearer at larger print sizes and with 0.12 to 0.16 mm layers.
One piece with the ground
York Minster is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. York Minster takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
