About York
York is an English cathedral city in North Yorkshire, sitting where the rivers Ouse and Foss meet. It is Yorkshire's traditional county town and the administrative center of the City of York district, 43 km (27 miles) northeast of Leeds. The 2021 census recorded 141,685 residents in York's built-up area. Founded as Eboracum in AD 71, the city later became the capital of the Roman province of Britannia Inferior. During the 19th century York grew into a major railway hub and a center of confectionery manufacturing.
York Minster is a large Gothic cathedral that dominates the city, and the site of the Roman fortress's headquarters lies under its foundations. The medieval walls around the center are the most complete in England, and they keep all their principal gateways and run about 4 km (2.5 miles) around 106 ha (263 acres). Grade I listing covers the minster, the castle, and the city walls. Central York also has Snickelways, narrow pedestrian routes, and the Shambles, a medieval street, narrow and shop-lined. The Baedeker Blitz struck York in the Second World War, gutting several historic buildings; restoration lasted until the 1960s.
