About Stadion Grbavica
Stadion Grbavica is a football ground in Sarajevo's Grbavica neighborhood, in Bosnia and Herzegovina. FK Željezničar plays its home games there, and the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team uses it from time to time. Its seated capacity is 13,057. The ground is also known as Dolina ćupova, the Valley of Jars.
Work on a sports ground in Grbavica began in the late 1940s, when Yugoslav communist authorities set aside resources for a multi-sport facility used by clubs of the SD Željezničar society. Supporters, friends and members of the club, among them Yugoslav People's Army personnel, helped with the building. Builders laid a fresh pitch, added a running track and installed drainage, next to basic concrete stands; the west end had wooden stands brought from the Marijin Dvor ground. The stadium opened on September 13, 1953 with a Yugoslav Second League match that Željezničar won 4–1 against RSD Šibenik.
Over the years the ground changed: a proper north stand was built in 1986, and the Bosnian War, which started in 1992, left the stadium with severe structural damage, while the wooden terraces of the west stand were burned. Football returned in 1996 with a local derby. Works in 2004 installed 8,898 seats across the north and south stands, and the floodlights were repaired in 2008–09. The stadium sits in Grbavica at the foot of Šanac Hill, with a tram station about 600 meters away.
