About the Burton Barr Central Library

Phoenix, Arizona, has its central library in the Burton Barr Central Library, the flagship branch and administrative headquarters of the Phoenix Public Library. The name honors Burton Barr, who served as Republican Majority Leader of the Arizona House from 1966 to 1986. The library holds 1 million volumes. A 1988 bond issue paid for the building, which replaced a nearby 1950s facility on McDowell Road.

DWL Architects and Will Bruder collaborated on the design. Opening in May 1995, the five-story building totals 280,000 sq ft, or 26,000 m2. A central open core contains three high-speed elevators and a staircase of five levels, called the "crystal canyon". The roof structure draws on Buckminster Fuller's tensegrity structures. Shade sails cover the north facade, while motorized louvers on the south facade help with sun control.

The fifth floor is an open reading room of 1 acre (0.40 ha), described as among the largest in the US. Each year the room hosts a summer solstice celebration, when the lighting is at its best. At solar noon, circles of sunlight from some roof skylights fall along the library's north-south midline axis, a few reaching the ground floor lobby.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes

Louvered facade and roof fins
The facade is covered in fine louvers, and a row of small fins runs along the roof. Print friendly merges the thinnest; Full detail keeps them at larger sizes and a finer layer height.
One piece with the ground
The Burton Barr Central Library is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Burton Barr Central Library takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

Common questions

Is there a Burton Barr Central Library STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. The Burton Barr Central Library grows with the print: about 8 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
