About the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Paterson

This historic Catholic cathedral and parish church is in Paterson, Passaic County, New Jersey, and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Paterson has its seat here. Patrick Charles Keely is named as its architect, and its style is Gothic Revival. The National Register of Historic Places listed it in 1977.

Its history is tied to the growth of Paterson's industries, which created a steady demand for skilled millhands and workers from the middle of the 1820s onward. By 1870, the U.S. Census showed Irish immigrants as the largest foreign-born group in the city.

Many of them clustered around Grand Street, a district known as "Dublin". There Father William N. McNulty took up his duties as a priest. In 1865 he bought sixteen lots at Grand and Main streets from the Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures, securing the future of a larger St. John's Church, later the cathedral.
