About Chillon Castle

Chillon Castle is a medieval castle on an island in Lake Geneva, just south of Veytaux in Switzerland's canton of Vaud. It sits at the lake's eastern end, along the narrow shore that runs between Montreux and Villeneuve and leads into the Alpine valley of the Rhône. The island is a small oval limestone rock with steep sides, and Chillon ranks among the medieval castles in Europe that draw the most visitors.

From this spot the castle watches the route between the Vaud Riviera, a way north toward France and Germany, and the Rhône valley, which offers a quick road to Italy. Whoever held it could control traffic to Italy for military and commercial ends and levy a toll. In the 11th century a square donjon rose on the island. The Counts of Savoy made it their summer home from the middle of the 12th century and maintained a fleet on Lake Geneva. Count Peter II greatly expanded it in 1248 and 1266–7, when Master James of Saint George added its distinctive windows.

The counts and dukes of Savoy also used the castle to house prisoners, the best known probably being François de Bonivard, a monk and historian from Geneva, who was imprisoned for six years from 1530. A Bernese army captured the castle in 1536 and freed the prisoners, and it became the residence of the Bernese bailiff until 1798. In the late 19th century a systematic restoration began, one of the earliest cases of using archaeology and history to rebuild a monument in a historically accurate way.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 9 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 11 mm 1:3,000
256 mm 14 mm 1:2,344

Conical towers and battlements
Cone-topped round towers and small battlements ring the walls. Print friendly adapts these small details to the print scale; Full detail keeps them, which suits a larger print or a fine nozzle.
Rooflines and tower tips
The castle packs many pitched roofs and tower tips onto a small rock island. A larger print size and layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keep these rooflines crisp.
One piece with the ground
Chillon Castle is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. Chillon Castle takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

About this model

Chillon Castle is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.

Common questions

Is there a Chillon Castle STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. Chillon Castle grows with the print: about 9 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
