About the Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord
Prague's Vinohrady district is home to this Roman Catholic church on Jiřího z Poděbrad Square. Construction ran from 1929 to 1932 to a design by the Slovene architect Jože Plečnik, who found his inspiration in old Christian and ancient patterns. It was among three new Prague buildings prompted by the 1000th anniversary of St. Wenceslas's death, and it is considered among the most significant Czech religious buildings of the 20th century.
The wide tower wall is 42 m high and holds a huge glazed clock 7.6 m in diameter, the largest in the Czech Republic. The basement holds a roomy chapel under a wooden caisson ceiling. Inside are six statues of Bohemia's patron saints, a three-meter gilded figure of Christ and an altar of white marble.
In World War II the tower lost its six bells, which were melted down to make arms; two copies came back in 1992. Since 2010 the church has counted among national cultural monuments. The sculptor Damian Pešan (1887–1975) made the statues above the main altar and also designed the liturgical vessels.
