About the David and Gladys Wright House

In Phoenix's Arcadia neighborhood, at 5212 East Exeter Boulevard, stands a house that Frank Lloyd Wright designed for his son David and David's wife, Gladys. Built between 1950 and 1952, it follows an organic style. Once the 2010s arrived, it counted among four surviving Wright buildings in Phoenix and nine across Arizona. The National Register of Historic Places lists its main house.

The main house is a curved concrete structure that sits on seven piers and is reached by a spiraling ramp. Its plan sweeps through 270 degrees around an inner courtyard. Orange trees filled the area at the time, and Wright wanted the couple to see over them. The pier design also lets breezes pass through the building.

Mostly rectangular concrete blocks, hollow and filled with pumice, make up the facade, with rounded blocks for the piers. Gaps that Wright left between the blocks produce a contrast of light and dark. The outer wall follows a circular arc with a radius of 23 m (77 ft). A second ramp leads up to the roof deck, from which Wright hoped the couple would take in the desert and Camelback Mountain nearby. Inside are three bedrooms and four bathrooms in 2,553 square feet (237.2 m²).

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Thin ramp and slim piers
The spiral ramp and roof edge are thin curved bands, and the house rests on a few slim piers. Print friendly adapts thin parts to the print scale; a larger print keeps more of the curves.
One piece with the ground
The David and Gladys Wright House is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The David and Gladys Wright House takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
