About Hotel San Carlos

Hotel San Carlos, which is also called San Carlos Hotel, is a working hotel and a tourist site in Phoenix, Arizona, and people have linked it with ghost sightings. The National Register of Historic Places listed it in 1983, and it belongs to Historic Hotels of America, which the National Trust for Historic Preservation runs. The site once held the first school in Phoenix, a 4-room adobe building inaugurated in 1874 and replaced by a larger one in 1879. The school was condemned in 1916.

The Babbitt family bought the land in 1919, and Charles Harris and Dwight D. Heard later took over the project and formed the Hotel San Carlos Company. Construction began in 1927 to a George Whitecross Richie design that follows Italian Renaissance style. It was state of the art, with the first air conditioning in Phoenix, plus elevators, chilled water circulating in the rooms and steam heat. It cost nearly $850,000, and it held its grand opening on March 19, 1928.

Harris and his family moved into the bungalow on the roof, and he worked to keep the hotel open through the Great Depression. It stayed with the Harris family until 1967, and in 1970 it was sold to Gregory Melikian, whose family restored it to match its original styling. Guests have included Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, Mae West, Carole Lombard and Gene Autry, and the hotel appears briefly in the first shot of Psycho, Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 film.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 13 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 17 mm 1:3,000
256 mm 21 mm 1:2,344

Grid of window openings
The tall block is covered by a regular grid of window openings. A layer height of 0.12–0.16 mm keeps the grid crisp, and a bigger print size keeps each opening clear.
Small hotel among large buildings
The hotel is small next to its neighbors, with a lower block beside it. Full detail keeps every modeled feature on larger prints, and Print friendly adapts the tiny parts on small ones.
One piece with the ground
Hotel San Carlos is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. Hotel San Carlos takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

Common questions

Is there a Hotel San Carlos STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. Hotel San Carlos grows with the print: about 13 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
