About Holy Trinity Cathedral, Addis Ababa

Holy Trinity Cathedral, called Kidist Selassie in Amharic, ranks highest among the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo cathedrals of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Emperor Haile Selassie oversaw its establishment on December 22, 1931. Construction was halted after the Italian invasion until 1942, when the cathedral was completed. Its purpose was to mark Ethiopia's victory over the Italian occupation, and afterward the church was designated as a place to commemorate those who resisted the invasion. Its title is Menbere Tsebaot, meaning 'Pure Altar'.

The cathedral has a threefold division modeled on Solomon's Temple. The congregation sings hymns in the outer ring, holy communion is given in the middle circle, and the innermost circle, accessible only to the priests, contains the Tabot. Circular churches are the most common type, but this cathedral is a square church.

Within the cathedral grounds are the Bale Wold Church, whose alternate name is Church of the Four Heavenly Creatures, along with primary and secondary schools, a monastery, the Holy Trinity Theological College and a museum. The cathedral is where the Orthodox Archdiocese of Addis Ababa has its official seat, and all bishops are consecrated there. Emperor Haile Selassie and Empress Menen Asfaw are buried in its north transept, and the churchyard holds the graves of patriarchs and of other prominent Ethiopians.
