About Kuwait Towers

Three slender towers make up the Kuwait Towers, which rise from a headland jutting into the Persian Gulf in Kuwait City. The group was the final one of six in the Kuwait Water Towers system, which has 34 towers in all, and its design differs a great deal from the other five. It was formally opened in March 1979 and is seen as a landmark and as a symbol of modern Kuwait.

The main tower, 187 meters (614 ft) high, has two spheres. A water tank fills the lower half of the lower sphere, and its upper half holds a restaurant, a lounge, a reception hall and a café. The upper sphere sits 123 meters (404 ft) above sea level, turns completely once every 30 minutes and houses a café. A second tower, 147 meters (482 ft) high, is a water tower, and a third holds the equipment that lights the other two.

Danish architect Malene Bjørn designed the towers for a water distribution project of the Swedish engineering firm VBB. Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmed, the Emir of Kuwait, asked for a more attractive design at the sixth site and picked the one built from three that were shown to him. Construction ran from 1971 to 1976 in reinforced and prestressed concrete. Around 41,000 enameled steel discs clad the spheres, in eight shades that range across blue, green and gray.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 50 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 63 mm 1:3,000
256 mm 80 mm 1:2,344

Thin spire above the spheres
A very thin spire rises above the upper sphere. Print friendly adapts it to the print scale; Full detail keeps it, which suits a larger print. Printing slowly with good cooling helps a tall thin tip.
Spheres on a slim shaft
The two spheres sit on a slim shaft above a wider base. Layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keep the curved shapes of the spheres smooth.
One piece with the ground
Kuwait Towers is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. Kuwait Towers takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

About this model

Kuwait Towers is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.

Common questions

Is there a Kuwait Towers STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. Kuwait Towers grows with the print: about 50 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
