About Nidaros Cathedral
Nidaros Cathedral, a Church of Norway cathedral, is in Trondheim, in Trøndelag county. It was built over the burial place of King Olav II, who lived from about 995 to 1030 and reigned from 1015 to 1028. He is credited with bringing Christianity to Norway and became the nation's patron saint. New Norwegian monarchs are consecrated there. The architectural style is Romanesque and Gothic, and it is the world's northernmost medieval cathedral. Historically, pilgrims from all over Northern Europe have made it an important destination.
The main building work ran for 230 years, starting in 1070 and substantially complete by 1300, although further work has continued on and off since. Fires in 1327 and 1531 badly damaged it, and the nave was destroyed and not rebuilt until the restoration of the early 1900s. A fire in 1708 left only the stone walls standing, and a lightning strike in 1719 led to another fire. Major rebuilding began in 1869 under architect Heinrich Ernst Schirmer, was nearly completed by Christian Christie, and was officially finished in 2001.
In 1152 the church was designated the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Nidaros, and during the Protestant Reformation, in 1537, it joined the state Church of Norway, which had just been established. It has seats for about 1,850 people. All its stained glass dates from the rebuilding of the 19th and 20th centuries: windows on the north side show Old Testament scenes against blue, and those on the south side show New Testament scenes against red.
How it prints
Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.
| Print size | Landmark height | Scale |
|---|---|---|
| 160 mm default | 25 mm | 1:3,750 |
| 200 mm | 31 mm | 1:3,000 |

- Tall, thin central spire
- A slender spire with a cross rises from the central tower and is the most delicate part. Print friendly adapts it to the print scale; Full detail keeps it on larger prints, and printing slowly with cooling helps the tip.
- Buttresses and pointed windows
- Rows of buttresses and tall pointed windows line the nave and the rounded east end. A larger print keeps them distinct, and 0.12 to 0.16 mm layers help.
- One piece with the ground
- Nidaros Cathedral is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
- Pick the detail for your nozzle
- In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
- Colors
- Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. Nidaros Cathedral takes the building color.
- File format
- You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
About this model
Nidaros Cathedral is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.
Common questions
Is there a Nidaros Cathedral STL I can download?
Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.
How big can I print it?
Any print size from 40 mm across. Nidaros Cathedral grows with the print: about 25 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.
Is it free?
Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
