About Palazzo Madama, Turin

Palazzo Madama stands in Turin, in Piedmont, and was the Kingdom of Italy's first Senate. It carries the nickname Madama, Italian for Madame, which Marie Jeanne of Savoy, known as Madama Reale, conferred on it for good when she lived there. In 1997 UNESCO placed it on the World Heritage list alongside 13 other House of Savoy residences.

At the start of the first century BC, a gate in the Roman walls occupied the site, and two restored towers still testify to this original core. After the Western Roman Empire fell, the gate served as a fortified stronghold in the city's defenses. The Savoia-Acaja, a secondary line of the House of Savoy, later held the building and enlarged it into a castle in the early 14th century. Ludovico of Acaja rebuilt it a century later in a square shape, with an inner court, a portico and four cylindrical towers, one at each corner. The back of the palace still clearly shows that form.

In 1637 Christine of France, regent for Duke Charles Emmanuel II, chose the building as her personal residence. In 1716 the architect Filippo Juvarra designed a new palace in the Baroque style, in white stone, at Marie Jeanne's request, but work stopped in 1721, with just the front section finished. That section overlooks Piazza Castello as a scenographic façade only one bay deep, and it screens the rear part of the building. The City Museum of Ancient Art has been housed there since 1934.
