About Turin

Turin is a business and cultural center in northern Italy, and Piedmont's capital and largest city. It sits chiefly along the River Po's western bank and is surrounded by Superga hill and the western Alpine arch. The city proper had 855,654 residents in 2026, and Eurostat estimates 1.7 million inhabitants in the urban area. Turin became the capital of the Savoy duchy in 1563 and later of the Kingdom of Sardinia. From 1861 to 1865 it served as the first capital of the united Kingdom of Italy. It forms part of the industrial triangle with Milan and Genoa, and Fiat was established there in 1899.

Turin's architecture runs through Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassical and Art Nouveau styles. Many public squares, castles, gardens and palazzi, including the Palazzo Madama, date from the 16th to 18th centuries, and part of the historical center is on the World Heritage List. Under the Kingdom of Sardinia, the architect Filippo Juvarra started a large-scale redesign of the city. The Mole Antonelliana is the architectural symbol of the city and houses the National Museum of Cinema. The 1902 Universal Exposition held there is frequently seen as the high point of Art Nouveau design. Bombing raids in World War II destroyed or damaged 54% of the city's buildings.
