About Parliament House Canberra

Parliament House in Canberra is where the Parliament of Australia meets, and it also holds the core of the executive. Inside are the cabinet room and the prime minister's offices. The building sits at the National Triangle's southern tip, on and under Capital Hill, ringed by the State Circle. Mitchell/Giurgola & Thorp Architects designed it, and a joint venture of Concrete Constructions and John Holland built it. The Federal Parliament had sat in Old Parliament House from 1927, and left it in 1988. Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the new building on May 9, 1988.

Entries to the design competition numbered 329, from 29 countries. The winner was the Philadelphia-based firm Mitchell/Giurgola, with the Italian-born architect Romaldo Giurgola directing the on-site work. Their plan put most of the building underground beneath Capital Hill and crowned it with a huge spire that carries a big Australian flag; the spires supporting the flagpole trace the outline of the triangular capitol that Walter Burley Griffin had envisioned. Two large curved walls split the building into four quadrants, which hold the House of Representatives and the Senate, the executive wing, and a formal entrance and event space.

Building began in 1981. The aim was to finish by Australia Day, January 26, 1988, the date marking 200 years of European settlement in Australia, for an expected cost of $220 million, but it missed both the deadline and the budget. The flagpole is 81 meters (266 feet) tall and weighs 250 tonnes, made of polished stainless steel. Excavating the site removed about one million cubic meters of rock (35,000,000 cubic feet), which went into filling low-lying areas of the city.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 1050 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Slim flagpole mast
A mast of four slim legs carries the flagpole high above the roof. Print friendly adapts thin parts like these to your print scale; Full detail keeps them, best printed slowly with good cooling and 0.12 to 0.16 mm layers.
Long thin curved walls
Two long curved walls cut through low wings that spread across the hill. A larger print keeps these thin walls and small roof features easier to read.
One piece with the ground
Parliament House Canberra is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. Parliament House Canberra takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
