About the Theater an der Wien
Named the Theater an der Wien, this historic theater stands on Vienna's Left Wienzeile, within the Mariahilf district, and was completed in 1801. Its stage has presented premieres of celebrated theater, opera and symphonic works. Since 2006 it has operated mainly as an opera house with its own company, in cooperation with Vereinigte Bühnen Wien, which also runs the Raimund Theater and the Ronacher. Its name refers to the Wien River, which once flowed past the site; the covered riverbed is home to the Naschmarkt open-air market.
Emanuel Schikaneder, who wrote the libretto for Mozart's The Magic Flute and worked with him on it, conceived the theater. His troupe had performed at the smaller Theater auf der Wieden, where The Magic Flute premiered, and he wanted a larger, better-equipped venue. He received an imperial license in 1786 but acted on it in 1798. Franz Jäger designed the building in Empire style, and it was completed in 1801. It opened on June 13, 1801 with a prologue by Schikaneder and Franz Teyber's opera Alexander.
From 1945 to 1955 the Vienna State Opera used the theater as a temporary home after its own building was destroyed in the war. It closed for safety reasons in 1955 and was later threatened with conversion into a parking garage. From 1962 it became a venue for contemporary musical theater; the musical Elisabeth premiered there in 1992 and ran for six years, and Cats played for seven years.
