About the Zytglogge

The Zytglogge, whose name means 'time bell' in Bernese German, is a tower from the Middle Ages in Bern, Switzerland, dating to the early 13th century. Over its history it has been a guard tower and a prison, then a clock tower, and it has also been a civic memorial and a focus of city life. The tower has heritage status of national significance and belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Old City of Bern. Its astronomical clock, from the 15th century, draws many tourists.

Around 1218–1220, when it was first built, the tower served as a gate tower in the western fortifications of Bern, a squat building only 16 meters (52 ft) tall. Around 1270–1275 the tower was raised another 7 meters (23 ft) so it overlooked the nearby houses. A fire in 1405 burnt the tower out completely. The name comes from the great bell cast in 1405 and from a clock first mounted over the gate early in the 15th century.

A 1770 renovation determines the outward appearance of the tower, and a thorough restoration in 1981–1983 generally returned it to that look. The overall height is 54.5 meters (179 ft), on a rectangular footprint of 11.2 by 10.75 meters (36.7 by 35.3 ft). Its shaft is sheathed in sandstone above a two-story plinth of alpine limestone. A wooden pinnacle adds a further 15 meters (49 ft) above the red-tiled spire, topped by a weather vane bearing Bern's cut-out coat of arms and a gilded knob.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 15 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 18 mm 1:3,000
256 mm 24 mm 1:2,344

Tall spire and pinnacle
The spire narrows into a thin pinnacle at the top. Print friendly adapts it to the print scale; a larger print or Full detail keeps more of it. Print slowly with good cooling.
Arched gateway at the base
A gate arch opens through the base of the tower, with clock faces above it. A larger print size and 0.12–0.16 mm layers keep the arch and the round faces crisp.
One piece with the ground
The Zytglogge is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Zytglogge takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

About this model

The Zytglogge is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.

Common questions

Is there a Zytglogge STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. The Zytglogge grows with the print: about 15 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
