3D print Mount Tongariro and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing
Mount Tongariro on one print, with the Tongariro Alpine Crossing raised in orange on the terrain. Open it in the generator, change the size or colors, and export a slicer-ready 3MF.
Tongariro Alpine Crossing
- Length
- 19.4 km (12.1 mi), one way
- Time
- About seven hours
- Passes
- Mount Ngauruhoe, Ketetahi Hot Springs
- On the print
- 20 km, as mapped in OpenStreetMap
1,978 m of mountain, 37 mm on your shelf
The print covers 15 by 15 km. On a 160 mm print the summit stands 37 mm above the valleys.
- Taller than life
The print opens with the Elevation multiplier at 2, so the mountain stands 2 times its true height and its shape reads clearly at this size. Set it to 1 for true scale.
- The trail
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing prints as a raised 1.2 mm orange line, drawn from its OpenStreetMap route. Give it its own filament color, or turn it off on the GPX tab.
- Colors
Forest, meadow, bare rock, ice and water each get their own color where the land has them, so a multi-color printer shows where the trees give way to rock.
About Mount Tongariro
Mount Tongariro is a compound volcano in the Taupō Volcanic Zone of the North Island of New Zealand, rising to 1,978 m (6,490 ft). It lies 20 km (12 mi) southwest of Lake Taupō and is the northernmost of the three active volcanoes that dominate the centre of the island.
Its many craters and the cone of Mount Ngauruhoe beside it make a busy, rugged print. It last erupted in November 2012.
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is among the most popular day hikes in New Zealand. It crosses 19.4 km (12.1 mi) of volcanic ground over the multi-cratered Mount Tongariro, past the eastern base of Mount Ngauruhoe, and takes about seven hours in good weather.
The last two hours are a long descent down the northern flank past the Ketetahi Hot Springs. The print draws the whole crossing from OpenStreetMap.

Common questions
Is the Mount Tongariro 3D print free?
Yes. The generator runs in your browser and exports a 3MF file you can open in any common slicer. There is no account or payment.
Is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing on the print?
Yes. Print this mountain adds it from its OpenStreetMap route (20 km as mapped) and raises it on the terrain. The footprint is 15 by 15 km, centered on the summit and wide enough for all of it.
Is the mountain printed at its true height?
It starts at 2 times its true height, about 37 mm of relief on a 160 mm print, because true scale looks flat at this size. Set the Elevation multiplier to 1 for true scale, or higher for a more dramatic model.
Can I get an STL instead of a 3MF?
The generator exports 3MF, which keeps each color as its own part. Any slicer can open it and save an STL if you need one.
