About 22 Bishopsgate

22 Bishopsgate is a commercial skyscraper, finished in 2020, on Bishopsgate in the City of London's financial district. It rises 278 m (912 ft) over 62 stories. It took the place of an earlier scheme, The Pinnacle, a 288 m (945 ft) tower whose construction began in 2008 and was halted in 2012 after the Great Recession, leaving just the concrete core of its first seven floors built. A later redesign cut construction costs, and the building took its postal address as its name.

Kohn Pedersen Fox were the architects of The Pinnacle, first called the Bishopsgate Tower, for which planning permission was sought in June 2005 and granted in April 2006. Its height was first proposed at 307 m (1,007 ft) and cut to 288 m (945 ft) after the Civil Aviation Authority raised concerns. The twisting roof and curling façade patterns drew on armadillos, mushrooms and seashells, which earned it the nickname The Helter Skelter. In 2015 a group of investors headed by Axa Real Estate acquired the site, and a redesign with a simpler exterior followed.

The foundations set a record: by March 2009 builders had put in the UK's longest piles, reaching 65.5 m (215 ft) below ground level. The earlier record holder, Moor House, had foundations 57 m (190 ft) deep. Later, a redesign cutting the height to 255 m because of crane concerns near London City Airport's flight paths was approved, then withdrawn once the 278 m design received approval.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 75 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 93 mm 1:3,000

Stepped, slanted crown
The tower narrows in steps and ends in a slanted top. Printing slowly with good cooling helps the upper stories hold their shape.
Fine facade lines
The facade carries fine vertical lines. Print friendly adapts this detail to your print scale; Full detail keeps it, best on a larger print with 0.12 to 0.16 mm layers.
One piece with the ground
22 Bishopsgate is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. 22 Bishopsgate takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
