About London

London is the capital of both England and the United Kingdom, and the largest city of each. It lies in southeast England, on the River Thames, where an 80 km (50-mile) tidal estuary leads to the North Sea. The Romans founded its ancient core, the City of London, as Londinium, and it keeps its medieval boundaries. To the west, the City of Westminster has been home to the national government and its parliament for centuries. Since 1965 the city has largely been the administrative area of Greater London, which is run by the Greater London Authority and 33 local authorities.

London's buildings range across many architectural styles and ages. Besides the Tower of London, few structures in central London date from before the Great Fire of 1666, and the Tudor-period Hampton Court Palace stands farther out. The 17th century appears in churches by Christopher Wren, and Victorian architecture shows at the railway termini of St. Pancras and Paddington. Canary Wharf and the City of London, the two financial districts, hold most of the skyscrapers. St Paul's Cathedral has protected views, and since 1937 high-rise building that would obstruct them has been restricted. The 95-story Shard London Bridge is the UK's tallest building, and Western Europe's as well.
