About Alcatraz
Alcatraz Island sits in San Francisco Bay, about 1.25 miles from the city of San Francisco, California, near the Golden Gate strait. A lighthouse, fortifications and a military prison were built there in the mid-19th century. The island measures 511 m (1,675 ft) by 180 m (590 ft) and rises 41 m (135 ft) at its highest point during mean tide, and its total area is reported to be 8.9 ha (22 acres).
A federal prison, Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, took over the island in 1934. Strong tidal currents and cold water made escape nearly impossible, and the prison became known as one of the most notorious of its kind in American history. It closed on March 21, 1963. Starting in November 1969, a group of Native Americans occupied the island for more than 19 months. Over time they were joined by other urban Native Americans and by members of the American Indian Movement, and they were among activists staging public protests nationwide during the 1970s.
In 1972 control passed to the Department of the Interior, which made the island part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and the National Park Service manages its facilities. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986. The island's features include the oldest operating lighthouse on the US West Coast, early military fortifications, rock pools and a seabird colony. Nearly 1.4 million people visit each year.
How it prints
Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.
| Print size | Landmark height | Scale |
|---|---|---|
| 160 mm default | 7 mm | 1:3,750 |
| 200 mm | 9 mm | 1:3,000 |

- Rows of narrow windows
- The building's walls carry many small, narrow window slots. Print friendly adapts them to your print scale; a larger print or Full detail keeps more of them, and thin layers keep the edges crisp.
- Thin raised roof ridges
- Two long raised ridges run along the flat roof. Layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keep these slim details sharp.
- One piece with the ground
- Alcatraz is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
- Pick the detail for your nozzle
- In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
- Colors
- Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. Alcatraz takes the building color.
- File format
- You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
About this model
Alcatraz is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.
Common questions
Is there an Alcatraz STL I can download?
Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.
How big can I print it?
Any print size from 40 mm across. Alcatraz grows with the print: about 7 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.
Is it free?
Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
