About the Transamerica Pyramid

The Transamerica Pyramid is a modernist skyscraper shaped like a pyramid, with 48 stories, at 600 Montgomery Street in San Francisco's Financial District, between Clay and Washington Streets. Architects Harry D. Som and William Pereira designed it, and Hathaway Dinwiddie Construction Company built it. It stands 260 m (853 ft) tall. At its 1972 completion it ranked as the eighth-tallest building worldwide, and it was San Francisco's tallest building until 2017.

Construction began in 1969 where the Montgomery Block once stood and ended in 1972. Transamerica CEO John (Jack) R. Beckett commissioned the tower and picked the pyramid shape because he wanted to let light reach the street below. Its shape is a tall pyramid with four sides and two "wings": an elevator shaft fills the east wing, while a stairwell and a smoke tower fill the west one.

The top 65 m (212 ft) of the building is the spire, and the top is covered with aluminum panels. Crushed quartz covers the façade and gives the building its light color. It has 3,678 windows, and only two of its 18 elevators reach the top floor. At its base is Redwood Park, a half-acre public space that is privately owned and was designed by Tom Galli, with redwood trees brought from the Santa Cruz Mountains during the tower's construction.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 70 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 87 mm 1:3,000
256 mm 111 mm 1:2,344

A needle-thin spire
The top narrows to a very fine point. Printing slowly with good cooling helps this tall thin part, and layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keep the tip crisp.
Thin supports at the base
Slim angled supports show at the foot of the tower. Print friendly adapts thin parts to the print scale, while Full detail keeps every one, which suits larger prints or a fine nozzle.
One piece with the ground
The Transamerica Pyramid is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Transamerica Pyramid takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

About this model

The Transamerica Pyramid is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.

Common questions

Is there a Transamerica Pyramid STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. The Transamerica Pyramid grows with the print: about 70 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
