About Coit Tower

A tower 64 m (210 ft) high, Coit Tower, also known as Coit Memorial Tower, overlooks the city and San Francisco Bay from Telegraph Hill in San Francisco, California. It stands in Pioneer Park and was built between 1932 and 1933 with a bequest from Lillie Hitchcock Coit to beautify the city. Henry Temple Howard and Arthur Brown Jr. were the architects of the Art Deco tower, which is built of unpainted reinforced concrete. Arthur Brown Jr. won the design competition, and the finished tower was dedicated on October 8, 1933.

People often say the tower honors the volunteer firemen who died in San Francisco's major fires, but that is wrong. Coit's will contained two bequests: one for a memorial for the volunteer firefighters of the city, which became statuary in Washington Square, and one to beautify the city, which led to the tower. Above the main entrance is a concrete phoenix relief by the sculptor Robert Boardman Howard; the architect commissioned it, and it was cast along with the building. A story that the tower was designed to look like a fire hose nozzle is apocryphal, and the resemblance is coincidental.

Three concrete cylinders nest inside one another. The outermost is a tapering fluted 55 m (180 ft) shaft that carries the viewing platform, while a stairway runs through an intermediate shaft and the elevator through an inner one. The observation deck is 9.8 m (32 ft) below the top, and above that sit an arcade and skylights. Inside are murals painted in fresco, in the style of American Social Realism, by 22 different artists working onsite, along with their assistants.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale

200 mm 22 mm 1:3,000

Fine fluting on the shaft
The tall round shaft is fluted with fine vertical grooves. Print friendly adapts them to the print scale; Full detail keeps them on larger prints, and 0.12 to 0.16 mm layers help.
Open arcade at the top
The top is a ring of small arches with an open crown. Printing slowly with cooling helps these thin parts, and a larger print keeps the arches open.
One piece with the ground
Coit Tower is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. Coit Tower takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

About this model

Coit Tower is one of more than 2,300 landmark models in Mini Skyline. They are made with AI, and each one is checked from four sides in its real surroundings before release. Everything around it is built from OpenStreetMap and Overture map data. If you would rather print the shape from map data, turn off Landmark models in the Buildings settings.

Common questions

Is there a Coit Tower STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. Coit Tower grows with the print: about 18 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
