About San Francisco

San Francisco ranks fourth among California's cities by population, with 826,079 residents in 2025. It stands at the Golden Gate, where settlers from New Spain founded the Presidio of San Francisco and, a few miles away, Mission San Francisco de Asís in 1776. A gold rush in 1849 spurred rapid growth, and San Francisco was then the biggest city on the West Coast. In 1856 it became a consolidated city-county. Tourism is one of the city's key private-sector industries, supplying over one in seven jobs.

The city is known for steep rolling hills and an eclectic mix of architecture across its neighborhoods. In 1794, the Presidio built a fortification, the Castillo de San Joaquín, on the Golden Gate's southern side; it later came to be called Fort Point. The 1906 earthquake and fire destroyed three-quarters of the city, yet it was quickly rebuilt, and nine years later it hosted the Panama–Pacific International Exposition. Among the places tourists visit are the Painted Ladies at Alamo Square Park, Lombard Street, noted for how crooked it is, and Pier 39 with its views of the bay.
