About the Basilica di Santo Stefano Maggiore
The Basilica di Santo Stefano Maggiore, a church in Milan, Italy, was established in the 5th century. It was first dedicated to Saint Zechariah and Saint Stephen; later to Saint Stephen alone. Other names are St. Stephen in Brolo, from the old name of the district, and St. Stephen's Gate, after a postern of Santo Stefano that no longer exists. The first church was built about 417 at the initiative of Martinianus, then the future bishop; it burned down in 1070 and was given a Romanesque rebuilding in 1075.
Duke Galeazzo Maria Sforza was assassinated in the basilica on December 26, 1476, while attending the patron saint's celebration. The painter Michelangelo Merisi, who is better known as Caravaggio, was baptized there on September 30, 1571; a baptismal certificate found in February 2007 confirmed it. From 1594 a series of works followed: the apse and main altar were enlarged in the early 17th century, the nave was lengthened and the facade rebuilt in the mid 17th century, and the bell tower was rebuilt by the architect Gerolamo Quadrio of Lugano after a collapse in 1642. A sacristy followed in the early 18th century, and some chapels were modernized in the early 19th century.
