About Milan

Milan is the capital of Lombardy, a region of northern Italy. It had 1,362,863 residents in 2026, which makes it Italy's second-largest city after Rome, and its metropolitan area, with an estimated 6.55 million people, is the largest in the country. A Celtic tribe founded Milan around 590 BC, and the Romans conquered it in 222 BC, Latinizing its name to Mediolanum. Between AD 284 and 402 it served the Roman Empire's western part as capital. From the 19th century on, Milan led Italy's industrial and financial development.

Italy's largest church, Milan Cathedral took from 1386 to 1877 to build and is the country's most important example of Gothic architecture. Under the Sforza in the 15th century, an old Viscontean fortress was enlarged into the Castello Sforzesco, whose high central entrance tower was commissioned from the Florentine Filarete. The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a covered passage roofed in glass and cast iron, was realized by Giuseppe Mengoni from 1865 to 1877 and was inspired by London's Burlington Arcade. The Pirelli Tower (1956–60), by Gio Ponti, and the Velasca Tower (1956–58) went up during the urban expansion of the 1950s and 1960s.
