About Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is a major landmark of Milan and the oldest active shopping arcade in Italy. The building is a double arcade four stories high at the heart of Milan, and it carries the name of Victor Emmanuel II, the Kingdom of Italy's first king. The design dates from 1861, and the architect Giuseppe Mengoni built it between 1865 and 1877. It links the Duomo with the Teatro alla Scala, two famous Milan landmarks, yet it counts as a landmark itself.

Two glass-vaulted arcades cross each other at an octagon, together covering the street between Piazza del Duomo and Piazza della Scala. The roof is arching glass and cast iron, and a glass dome tops the central octagon. Four barrel vaults, each approximately 14.5 m wide and 8.5 m high, meet at a dome of about 37.5 m inside diameter, 17.10 m high, and a lantern tops each part of the roof. The French firm Atelier Henry Joret made, shipped and installed the ironwork, and Saint-Gobain supplied the glass as flat ribbed plates.

The Galleria was bigger than the arcades before it and is the direct progenitor of the modern glazed, enclosed shopping mall. Many other arcades and malls borrow the term galleria because of it. Its nickname is il salotto di Milano, meaning Milan's drawing room, for its many shops and its role as a meeting and dining place. It houses shops and restaurants that rank among the oldest in Milan, among them Biffi Caffè (founded in 1867) and the Borsalino hat shop (1883).

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Open ribbed roof arms
Four arms of thin ribs and lattice cross at the center, with lanterns at the ends. Print friendly adapts the ribs to the print scale; Full detail keeps every rib on a larger print.
A ribbed central dome
The crossing is topped by a dome of fine ribs. Layers of 0.12–0.16 mm keep its curved ribs crisp, and printing slowly helps the delicate parts cool.
One piece with the ground
Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.
