About the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul, Prague
Dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul, the church stands inside Prague's Vyšehrad fortress. It is collegiate and parish, and was built in neo-Gothic style. King Vratislaus II of Bohemia founded a Romanesque basilica there in 1070–1080; it burned in 1249 and was rebuilt in Gothic and later neo-Gothic style. A stone mosaic sits above the entrance, and the twin 58 m towers stand on a hill and can be seen from along the Vltava River. Pope John Paul II elevated the church to basilica in 2003.
The present building was constructed between 1887 and 1903. Joseph Mocker began as master builder but died during the work, and his partner František Mikš completed it, changing the facade and tower designs. The interior combines a nave, two side aisles, a choir, sanctuary and apse; there is no transept. Pointed windows with stained glass light a cross-vaulted ceiling, while the west front has three vestibules, two towers and a triangular gable.
Behind the church lie a large park and the Vyšehrad cemetery, where many notable Czechs are buried, among them the writer Karel Čapek and the composer Antonín Dvořák. The spires of the towers are hollow, pierced with slender openings and edged with petal-like finials. The main portal shows Jesus with his apostles, and the archangel Michael appears below them.
