About Prague

Prague, on the Vltava River, is the largest city and capital of the Czech Republic, and Bohemia's historical capital. About 1.4 million people live in the city, and the metropolitan area has approximately 2.3 million. Prague served as capital for the Kingdom of Bohemia, and several Holy Roman Emperors lived there, most notably Charles IV, who reigned 1346–1378, and Rudolf II, who reigned 1575–1611. The city mattered to Austria-Hungary and the Habsburg monarchy, and in the 20th century it was Czechoslovakia's capital between the wars and in the post-war Communist era.

Prague's architecture includes Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque work, along with Cubist and Art Nouveau buildings, Rococo and Neo-Gothic ones, and ultra-modern designs. The city came through World War II with considerably less damage than some other major cities of the region, so most of its historic architecture stayed true to form. Prague Castle, Charles Bridge, and the Prague astronomical clock in Old Town Square are among its cultural attractions, with Vyšehrad, Petřín hill, and the Jewish Quarter. Since 1992, the historic center of Prague has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
