About the Christchurch Town Hall

Christchurch Town Hall opened in 1972 and is the premier performing arts center of Christchurch, New Zealand. It stands in the central city, on the Avon River, looking over Victoria Square. Severe damage from the February 2011 earthquake kept it closed until 2019. Staff first advised demolishing everything except the main auditorium, yet councillors voted in November 2012 to rebuild the whole hall.

The hall was planned for many kinds of events, among them orchestral concerts, opera, ballet, drama, rock and jazz, conventions and conferences. Maurice Mahoney and Sir Miles Warren, of the firm Warren and Mahoney Architects, designed it, and Professor Harold Marshall advised on the acoustics. The Governor General, Sir Denis Blundell, opened it on September 30, 1972, and the 1974 British Commonwealth Games used it for weightlifting and wrestling.

Marshall fitted the main hall with reflection panels along the auditorium's sides, steering sound around the room; this innovation became the basis of modern concert hall design worldwide. The auditorium has 2,250 seats and a reputation for its acoustics, and the venue also has the 750-seat James Hay Theatre and a Rieger pipe organ. The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and the Christchurch City Choir call it home. Heritage New Zealand gave it Category I Historic Place status in 2020.

How it prints

Make this print opens the generator on a 600 m square around the landmark. Buildings print at close to true scale, so the landmark grows with the print size.

Landmark height and scale at three print sizes
Print size Landmark height Scale
160 mm default 8 mm 1:3,750
200 mm 10 mm 1:3,000
256 mm 13 mm 1:2,344

Ribbed round halls
The round halls have many tall vertical ribs and stepped terraces around their bases. Layers of 0.12 to 0.16 mm keep the ribs crisp, and a larger print keeps more of them.
Many small steps and ridges
Fine steps and parallel ridges cover the roofs and terraces. Print friendly adapts them to the print scale; Full detail keeps every one, which suits a fine nozzle.
One piece with the ground
The Christchurch Town Hall is joined to the ground in the exported file, and the four-side check found no floating parts, so nothing needs gluing.
Pick the detail for your nozzle
In the Buildings settings, set Landmark detail to Print friendly to adapt thin parts and small details to the print scale. Full detail keeps every modeled feature, for larger prints or a finer nozzle.
Colors
Buildings, roads, water and ground arrive as separate filament slots in the 3MF. The Christchurch Town Hall takes the building color.
File format
You get a 3MF for Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer or PrusaSlicer. Any of them can save it as STL if you need one.

Common questions

Is there a Christchurch Town Hall STL I can download?

Mini Skyline builds the file for you in your browser and exports 3MF, which every major slicer opens. If you need an STL, open the 3MF in your slicer and export it from there.

How big can I print it?

Any print size from 40 mm across. The Christchurch Town Hall grows with the print: about 8 mm tall on the default 160 mm print. For a model larger than your printer bed, Project Mode splits the area into tiles.

Is it free?

Yes. Generation runs in your browser, with no account and nothing behind a paywall.
